The nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico to work in the United States as NAFTA professionals. The following is a list of the State Department’s requirements for obtaining a TN visa:
Canadian Citizens
Canadian citizens usually do not need a visa as a NAFTA Professional, although a visa can be issued to qualified TN visa applicants upon request. A Canadian residing in another country with a non-Canadian spouse and children would need a visa to enable the spouse and children to be able to apply for a visa to accompany or join the NAFTA Professional, as a TD visa holder.
A Canadian citizen applying at a U.S. port of entry will need to have the following:
-
Evidence of professional employment;
-
Proof of business qualifications, such as school transcripts, license, degrees, records of previous employment, etc.;
-
Proof of Canadian citizenship (permanent residents are not eligible).
Requirements for Mexican Citizens
Mexican citizens may apply at consular sections around the world for a NAFTA professional (TN) visa. As part of the visa application process, an interview at the embassy consular section is required for most visa applicants. Interviews are generally by appointment only. Mexican citizens will need to have the following in order to obtain a TN visa:
- Complete a Nonimmigrant Visa Application, as well as the Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application form for those between the ages of 16 and 45.
- One 2 X 2 photograph
- Proof of professional employment
- Proof of Mexican citizenship
- Proof of business qualifications, such as school transcripts, license, degrees, records of previous employment, etc.
